Jesus saw the crowds with compassion because they were “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:35–38). Like sheep, people are defenseless, dependent, and disempowered, unable to overcome life’s greatest spiritual challenges on their own. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, not only invites us to receive His care but also calls us to join in His pastoral work by serving, teaching, encouraging, and walking alongside others. Through the church, God equips believers to care for one another, because the healing of sin is not meant to happen in isolation but in community. As James 5:16 reminds us, both confession and compassionate listening are vital, allowing God’s grace to restore those who are vulnerable, dependent, and in need of spiritual healing.
